Wye Valley, Wales, UK. (Aug 21)
…a cracking weekend with the kids (I include myself in that description) exploring the Wye Valley during the daytime and playing games back at the campsite well into the night.
Hardly a phone signal here, let alone 4g, so a great place to check out and get back to nature without all the distractions of modern life. I lost count of the amount of kingfishers, egrets, heron, buzzards, sand martins, house martins, and geese we saw, let alone different duck varieties and more common birds
This area is a little slice of wildlife heaven. Quiet, empty and with welcoming locals and friendly travellers.
We stayed at the tiny village of Hoarwithy on a quaint campsite located right on the bank of the river. It was the perfect spot for the ‘Lucksall’ to ‘Ross on Wye’ kayak journey we planned on Sunday (19 miles from top to bottom). Great fun bobbing along and being pulled by the current or tackling the gentle rapids every few miles. As there were four of us we hired a canoe for Loz and Sarah, whilst Natty and I used the kayaks. That said we all swapped over every few miles and none of us fell in!
The local church at Hoarwithy had a very Tuscan feel to it which added to the sense of isolation and distance. The whole region is just wonderful but we only explored a 20 mile radius of this area, and at a slow pace. So much more of this valley to explore – maybe next time!
