Devon and Somerset UK. (Jul 21)
After the wonderful family weekend just passed, and with great weather forecast, Emma and I continued the fun from our base in the Southwest. We fitted in some cycling in Exmoor, kayaking in Salcombe and hill walking above Porlock Weir.
We found breathtaking scenery, discovered secluded coves, empty estuaries, magical coastlines and rivers.
It is really not difficult to find complete isolation in these parts with only a little effort required to get away from the crowds.
We travelled up and down on the tide from Salcombe to Kingsbridge, stopping en route for a pint at the CrabShell Inn, and finishing with a fabulous freshly caught evening meal at the CrabShack on the creek in Salcombe. The swim in the river Exe at Exebridge was a highlight too; the refreshing, clear water cooled the body after a two hour cycle in the searing heat. A fish and chip evening supper whilst watching the sun set on a near empty beach was another bonus.
But my favourite afternoon was at the location that has become my “go to” place to unwind. Porlock Weir and the surrounding area.
This time we headed off along the Southwest coastal path to Culbone Church, the smallest parish church in England. We saw only six people in over four hours and two of those were grave diggers!
16000 steps later we ended up on the secluded beach to the west of Porlock Weir, where acres of lush deciduous forests reach all the way to the rocky seashore. The surrounding sea was completely still; it just invited you in for a swim, but you have to be wary in these parts as the currents are pretty strong too. We sat on some driftwood, enjoying the tranquility, popping into the water to cool off from time to time.
The best things in life really don’t cost the earth!
